Taj Mahal is a blues musician who has moved freely across acoustic blues, country blues, electric blues, blues rock, and contemporary folk. He released World Blues in 2007 and Maestro in 2008, then came back in 2022 with GET ON BOARD. He records for Resonatin' Records.
The roots of that range are in study, not accident. Born in Harlem on May 17, 1942, he was a student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the early 1960s when he began exploring the origins of African American music and focused on acoustic blues. The same curiosity has kept him working in more than a dozen styles since.
He has also built his career through bands rather than a single fixed lineup, from the Rising Sons to the Taj Mahal Trio and Taj Mahal & the Hula Blues Band. His work has earned Grammy Awards, and his touring has taken him to rooms such as the Grand Opera House and the Academy of Music. That mix of catalog depth and seated-theater experience makes him a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, college programming, casino stages, corporate dates, and private events.
